Maegen Vis on breaking into the industry, Macklemore & Italian food.

What Maegen’s mother didn’t know when she discovered her five-year-old daughter sporting a lopsided bob with scissors in her hand, was that Maegen had just discovered her life’s passion. After graduating from John Casabancas Institute, Maegen’s hair career began and has been going strong ever since. A colour expert with a knack for righteous reds and balayage, Maegen shares her hobbies, advice for those breaking into the industry, and what motivates her.

When did you decide to be a hairstylist?

When I was a little girl, I cut all of my hair off and my excuse was there were scissors in my room. So, it seemed natural!

You say music inspires you. Who are you listening to now?

I’m really into hip hop lately (especially Macklemore’s new album and Kendrick Lamar).  It gets me super pumped for my day and I love watching their videos. I love the creativity that comes with it.

What would your advice be to a hairstylist who is starting out?
I would say my advice to a new stylist is to find a salon that inspires you and apprentice. I regret not doing that when I started out and I think it would have helped me out a ton with my skill set.

What’s your go-to hair product?

My favourite product is Kevin Murphy DOO.OVER. It gives life back to my fine hair and holds my styles!

You mentioned that your other passion is cooking? What’s your favourite dish to make?

I loooove making pasta.  I feel I should have been Italian.

Favourite restuarant in Vancouver?

Nook on Yew & Cornwall. If I was a millionaire I’d eat there every day, it’s that good.
