Are you a once-a-year hair colour client? You are not alone! A lot of people come to Artel Salon to get their yearly full head balayage and there is nothing wrong with that. However, when you get one big balayage service done once a year or longer, the process to achieve your dream hair is way bigger and often can be costly. What a lot of clients may not know is that there are a number of smaller services you can come in for to refresh your balayage that are fast but impactful!
A typical full head balayage involves lightening your hair and then toning to achieve your desired tone as well as seal the cuticle. The lightener removes pigment from your natural hair the toner adds a hue back into the hair. Over time, it is natural for the toner to fade out of your hair. This is very normal and depends on many factors such as sunlight exposure, how often you wash your hair, what hair care products you use, mineral buildup in the water you wash your hair, etc.

A colour melt is a similar process to getting a toner but with a different end result. Let us explain! The purpose of a colour melt is to deepen your root colour and blend out any lines of demarcation as your highlights or balayage grow our. A colour melt would blend a darker toner from the roots down. With balayage or highlights, contrast or dimension in the hair colour is a very useful tool to make the lighter hair look brighter. If you make some areas of your hair strategically darker, the already lightened hair will look even brighter without bleach! How amazing is that!

As mentioned previously, washing your hair can cause hair colour to fade. This is normal. So a simple fix is to wash your hair less. There are many positives to this besides maintaining your hair colour. For example, picture fewer “hair wash days” in your life….Sounds blissful right? Using a blue or purple shampoo and conditioner can help maintain the tone of your balayage especially if it is very light blonde. The pigment in a blue or purple shampoo helps neutralize the natural warm pigments in your hair. When your hair is lightened, it exposes the orange and yellow pigment that your hair is made up of. If you look at a colour wheel, blue and purple are on the opposite side from yellow and orange. After you wash your hair many times and your toner starts to fade, your hair colour will naturally start to fade to the warm or brassy side. This is why we LOVE blue and purple shampoos!
